For King and Country and the Power of Music
Last night, we had the pleasure of hosting For King and Country (@4KingAndCountry) at our church for a family Christmas concert. It was awesome! These guys were amazing. The stage was filled with instruments. Several drums, a xylophone, some kind of hand pump organ thingy, keyboards, guitars and even a cello.
One thing that one of the brothers said caught my attention. He told a story of a friend of his that was going through a rough time. They actually wrote a song especially for him, but didn’t tell him about it because they thought that it might hurt his feelings. When their friend heard it, he loved it! Well, some time went by, and they finally let the cat out of the bag. They told their friend that the sing was written specifically for him. They said he didn’t say anything, got in his car and drove off. They thought he was angry. Their friend called them not too long after that to tell them how grateful he was for that song. That song gave him hope. He basically wrapped up the song by explaining how powerful music can be.
Ami mentioned how true this was for us. Our youngest, Samuel, is 3 years old, and he has been diagnosed with PDD NOS, a part of the Autism spectrum. He is very developmentally delayed, especially in his speech. He’s just now starting to form sentences with the few words he does know. When we travel around in our vehicles with him, we’re usually listening to KSBJ, a local Christian station out of Houston. We tend to hear the most popular Christian artists and songs a lot and the kids love it. They love to sing along, even Samuel. In fact, he can sing his favorite songs word for word…. the WHOLE song!
This little boy, who slurs words and pieces together sentences that are too hard to understand, can sit on the floor, playing “drums” and sing “Our God is greater, our God is stronger, God you are higher than any other…” or even “Let my life be the proof, the proof of your love…” It’s crystal clear, too.
So is there power in music? Yes, especially if there is power in the lyrics! 🙂
P.S. If For King and Country is reading this, our oldest son, josh, would like a recording of your version of Little Drummer Boy. He was upset that I didn’t record it myself.
